Russian Artist Speaks on the “First Cultural Horse”

  • April 19, 2026

A splendid video of renowned Russian equine artist Alexey Nikolaevich Glukharev on exhibit at the 18th International Exhibition “Equiros 2016” with his beautiful variety of horse works.

At about 1:48 in the video he speaks on his favorite breed, the Akhal-Teke horse, referring to it as a “living monument of very very ancient civilizations” and the “first cultural horse”. He mentions how “all the riding crops of the world were created on the basis of this horse”. The Akhal-Teke’s history reaches back over 3,000, possibly 4,000 years, as arguably the oldest purebred breed in the world. We now know with genetic certainty that they greatly influenced most modern breeds, particularly through the impact of the Thoroughbred.

Quotes are roughly translated to English from the Russian video transcription. To follow along when watching the video, turn on English subtitles.
