An exquisite tribute to the 1935 Ashgabat-Moscow ride of Akhal-Teke horses. This is a 1937 handwoven carpet titled “Horse Run”, made in Ashgabat by Turkmen craftswomen and displayed as part of the “Carpet of Stories” exhibition at the All-Russian Decorative Arts Museum in Moscow.
The route took 84 days, almost 3,000 miles, and “passed through the sandy Garagum Desert, the Ustyurt Plateau covered with takyrs and salt marshes, the Kazakh steppes and the forest-steppes of Russia. The Akhal-Teke horses demonstrated their endurance and reliability. The historic race attracted significant public attention, and its participants deservedly became national heroes” (Chirtzova, 2024).
